Spanning 63 years, the New England Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions is proud to honor some of history’s greatest professional world boxing champions. Rocky Marciano won the New England’s back in 1948, followed over the years by Marvin Hagler in 1969, Sugar Ray Leonard in 1973, Tommy Hearns, and Lowell’s own “Irish” Mickey Ward in the 1980’s. In their path for glory thousands of young boxers with a dream to be a champion step into the ring, lace up their gloves, and put it all on the line.
Mill City Studios brings you on a journey to the New England towns and cities, to the back streets, and local gyms, all the way to the Golden Gloves. Venture back stage; meet the young boxers and their trainers, as they sacrifice to be the next champion of the Golden Gloves.
Our journey began one snowy winter night in 2008 at the Gloves where we sat ringside mesmerized by the fights like countless other boxers, fans and families have since 1946. We set out to capture the history and tradition of amateur boxing still alive today and began with their personal stories of boxing and the fight to survive.
As documentary filmmakers we engaged in trying to evoke life into the shadows of the boxing gym covered by smokestacks from a bygone era in the mill city on the banks of the Merrimack River. Here we became aware of that history, tradition, and culture entrenched in amateur boxing that lead young men and women into the ring at the Golden Gloves and beyond. Witness the raw emotions, inspiration, and pure courage to be a fighter.
FIGHTERS: Road to the Golden Gloves is a boxing documentary capturing the inspiration, the dream, and boxer’s moment of glory at the New England Golden Gloves.
